Moving into assisted living is one of the most significant transitions a senior can experience. There’s a lot to keep track of, so don’t miss out on tools that can make it easier. This checklist for moving into assisted living can help you stay organized and prepare for the work ahead.

Steps for Moving into a Senior Living Community

If you aren’t prepared, moving is one of the most stressful things a person can experience. When you’re moving into assisted living, managing the stress involved is critical to making it a good experience. Organization and preparation are the best ways to make your move as stress-free as possible. Let this checklist for moving into assisted living get you started right.

Step 1: Get Organized

Before the big move takes place, there’s plenty that you can do to get ready. Take some time and make a plan to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible:

  • It’s strongly recommended you hire movers for this process, especially if your senior loved one has mental or physical issues that make moving a challenge. A senior move manager can offer additional logistical support.
  • List all bills and services that must be canceled or transferred after the move. Provide disconnection and cancellation notices early if possible. Getting a change-of-address form is also a good idea, just in case you miss one!
  • Make a list of people who need your new address. This includes friends, family, and official bodies like the Social Security Administration. Be sure you have a plan to update them.
  • Contact the senior living community you’ll be joining for their support and advice. They’ll be able to help you make a plan that covers every contingency.

Step 2: Get Packing

Once you have a moving plan, it’s time to implement it. Getting packed for a move is a big job, but if you take it step-by-step, it’s doable:

  • Start downsizing early. Get rid of easy items like duplicates, broken objects, and rarely worn clothing. You can also rehome items with loved ones if needed.
  • Ask your new community if they can provide a packing list for you. The list should include what items will be provided by the community, as well as their recommendations on things to bring.
  • Get a copy of your new living space’s layout, including the available square footage. Use this to plan what furniture and other items you’ll bring.

Step 3: The Big Day

If you’ve done everything you need to prepare, your moving day will be as stress-free as possible. What can you do on moving day to make it a success?:

  • Coordinate friends and family to be on-call for help. Can someone bring some lunch? Or work with movers while you’re busy helping your loved one settle? The more support you have, the better.
  • Have a “first-day” box of practical items like toiletries and sentimental items to make the new place feel like home. Ensure this box is accessible and easy to unpack as your first thing in the new space.
  • Make some space for your loved one to process their feelings. They may be worried about adjusting to their new living space or feel sad about leaving their previous home. Offer a sympathetic ear and encourage them to look for things to be excited about in their new home.
